Is Palm Springs, CA a hippie-friendly place to live?

My 30-year-old partner Dave and I were considering Palm Springs as a place to live, because of its relatively cheap rent, gay-friendly ambience and proximity to nature. However, Dave is a long-haired hippie-alternative type, not really concerned about dressing up, the kind that would feel right at home in Venice Beach or Austin. I have shorter hair, but the same basic attitude. In general, is the local vibe in Palm Springs really preppie/country clubbish? Would we fit in with our old t-shirts and ragged jeans, or be like fish out of water?
