Did Jesus sacrifice himself for us to appease God or did God sacrifice himself to appease himself?

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. God sacraficed his son so that we may be cleansed in the blood of Jesus as a sign of his love for us and anyone who doesnt believe that, may God have mercy on your wretched souls when it comes time for you to face him at your time of judgement.
