Is it worth it to become a fashion designer?

I'm an apparel design and merchandising major at CSU Northridge. I just realize how hard it takes to become a good fashion designer and that its really time consuming. I research the minimum salary for beginning fashion designers and its around 30k-35k per year...which is not alot. I really enjoy creating fashion designs and doing anything fashion-related..but I just don't know if its worth it. I mean fashion designers work long hours and get low pay.
